Proposal to change Canada’s Oath of Citizenship

The Government of Canada is introducing a Bill to amend the Citizenship Act to change Canada’s Oath of Citizenship.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, proposed to add the following statement into the Canada’s Oath of Citizenship.

“I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen.”

How many people will truly understand and remember their Oath of Citizen they taken after the Citizenship Ceremony?

I wonder how newcomers can fully appreciate and respect the significant role of Indigenous Peoples in forming the nation of Canada if their culture and contributions are not being taught in school to our younger generation!

It is time the Government of Canada to do something more solid and practical in recognizing the Indigenous Peoples of this land.
